The focus of business process management initiatives and service-oriented architecture implementations are to create a more-agile and reusable set of processes in the form of services. But, the majority of services will only be as agile as the availability of the data and content they need. Moreover, there may be equal or greater opportunities for driving business agility and profitability through content-driven solutions in the forms of composite applications and “mashups”. This will require a focus on not just business process (re)design, but also on the design and management of an agile information-driven architecture.

Having been with Gartner for 14 years, Michael Blechar is vice president and research director in the Applications Architecture Research area of Gartner's Research and Advisory Services (RAS). Mr. Blechar specializes in the area of information architecture, metadata repositories, and modeling tools for business process analysis, object-oriented and component-based development and database design. Mr. Blechar has 38 years of experience in data processing, having held technical and management positions in systems development, data and database administration, and computer-aided software engineering (CASE) for several Fortune 500 companies, including American Can, Ciba-Geigy and the New York Stock Exchange.
